Join policymakers, Save the Children leadership, staff, and supporters from across the country and around the world to give voice to our common goal of creating real and lasting change in the lives of children in need.
This year Save the Children's Advocacy Day will focus on protecting and educating children when conflict or disaster strikes.
Over 77 million children are growing up around the world without an education. More than half of these children are living in countries affected by armed conflict. Millions more living in conflict-affected countries are receiving a substandard education. Investing in the education of children around the world will advance our efforts to promote global stability and enable the United States to continue to serve as an example of moral leadership in the world by offering children a sense of opportunity and hope for their future.
Children and youth affected by emergencies and disasters in the United States have unique needs which should be given special consideration. Over one thousand schools were closed immediately following Hurricane Katrina and 372,000 schoolchildren were initially unable to attend school in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast due to the hurricane. FEMA and other relevant agencies should prepare to respond to the needs children in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
We will kickoff the event on Wednesday, June 20th with a welcome reception and other events for advocates. On Thursday, June 21st participants will be trained on the issues, learn techniques for effective advocacy, meet with members of Congress and their staff.
